| History of the Race |
| The Pikes Peak
International Hill Climb is a unique motorsports event and is the second oldest
motorsports race (after the Indianapolis 500) in the United States. The start line is
9,300 feet (2,862 m) above sea level. The finish line is 156 turns, 12.5 miles (20.1 km)
and almost 5,000 feet (1,524 m) up to the 14,110 foot (4,300 m) summit of Pikes Peak. A
quote from Robby Unser puts this race in it's place: "This is a one-of-a-kind
event. I've been to all the great races -- LeMans, Monaco -- and this definitely ranks
with those. It's one of the world's great motorsports events." The first ever Pikes Peak Hill Climb was in 1916. In addition to the auto classes, the 1916 event featured four motorcycle races. In the first, a Harley-Davidson Sidecar carrying Passenger - D. Vanderhoof posted a winning time of 29:33. In the second motorcycle race of the day, Professional - Floyd Clymer on his Excelsior posted an overall record time of 21:58. In 1997 the Whitney brothers placed second in the Sidecar class aboard their 1000cc Harley-Davidson powered Sidecar, the first Harley-Davidson Sidecar to race here since the 1916 event ! The last time a Harley won (in any class) at Pikes Peak was when Bill Meier won the Open Pro (solo) class in 1954. In 1998, the Whitneys moved that statistic forward by 44 years. They significantly improved their Harley sidecar with a hopped-up Bartels' prepared 1200cc Sportster motor along with a very conservative amount of Nitrous Oxide boost. In 1999 they continued their winning ways and set a new sidecar record of 13:59. In 2000, they asked too much from their motor and threw a rod. For 2001 they switched to Suzuki power and a completely new chassis, and brought home another victory and another record time (13:42.06). |
